Mana, the Maiden Kachina
Necklace

Hemis Mana dances with the Hemis Kachina in the Niman or home-going dance (the end of the Ceremonial Dances season). She wears her hair in the butterfly whorls on the side of her head, the traditional style of an unmarried Hopi maiden. During part of the ceremony she plays a rasp. This is a gourd shell placed upside down on the ground with a notched stick placed on top. As the stick is held in one hand, a sheep bone is scraped across it making a deep grunting sound.
